samu (Student’s association of Macewan university) building

Client: MacEwan University

Stantec, Calgary, Alberta

SAMU is constructing a new building on the downtown Edmonton campus to serve its student population better: it should showcase student life to the city, provide space to both study and socialize, and facilitate programming and resources that currently cannot be accommodated on the campus. The building’s architectural program, includes study space, social space, a food service area, a large event space, club facilities and a large administrative office suite. The site, at the heart of the campus, is very long and narrow, measuring 13 meters wide by 130 meters long. Its centrality, in the middle of a sequence of 11 existing campus buildings, puts it at a high-prole location within the city, and the campus. The three-storey triple-glazed west curtain wall hangs like a wavy curtain to reveal student life inside the building and simultaneously oer playful and ever-changing reections o the exterior glass. All through the building, one can experience a sense of openness and connection to adjacent spaces.

csb (clinical skills building) veterinary medicine, university of calgary

Client: University of Calgary, Calgary, AB

Stantec, Calgary, Alberta

The new CSB building was initiated asses the need for more office space to accommodate the growing Facility of Veterinary Medicine. The intent of the new design addition was to honour both the architectural materials and the horizontal expression of the existing single storey building, while offering a unique architectural identity for this wing. The site design and landscaping around the building was also to emphasize horizontality, to enhance views out of the building into the expansive campus landscape and to highlight the character of the native prairie. Strips of indigenous plants (eg: Karl Foerster grasses) and strips of coloured concrete frame the views out of the building, and provide a simple courtyard for building patrons to enjoy the outdoors at lunchtime or on their breaks.

The floor plan is assembled in such a way as to cluster closed offices on the north and south sides of the building, cluster meeting rooms in an atrium-like environment in the middle of the floor plate, and cluster open workstations along the east.

Campus masterplan exercises that assessed existing historical, public, institutional, commercial and residential land and facilities and developed a visionary 1 to 5 to 25-year strategy that supported project student enrolment growth, enhanced learning environments, and anticipated evolving infrastructure needs. Each project required a detailed evaluation of existing facilities’ and site conditions and life cycle assessments, internal and external stakeholder engagements and an in-depth analysis of space utilization through precise utilization charts and drawings. This extensive groundwork enabled the development of actionable design recommendations for efficiencies, spatial improvements, and operational adjustments.
